I've been struggling over this for a while now. The Shadows are very hard to write for with a number of the topics we've had. Representatives of vastly powerful ancient alien races don't talk about their flaws, for example. I don't really want to give them up, but I'm just not able to consistently answer the topics for them at the moment.

SO, I'm retiring them from theatrical_muse. They will still be around for RP in the B5 universe if they're needed, and if I have time. Their journal will be coming with me.

I would like to ask, since this version of JMS' Shadows is kind of my own creation (based on 'Out of the Shadows', a fic that I wrote... um. Nearly a decade ago...), that if someone else does want to write the Shadows for TM, they please don't make theirs quite like Bugs and Daffy. We're given so little info on the Shadows that it's really open to interpretation :)

Thanks!! It's been fun, and honestly, they may be back sometime in the future. I don't know...

--Penemuel (Galenn)

Crossposted to theatrical_fen and theatrical_b5b7

Blind Trust, Or Just Blind?

Write a ficlet on the theme of "trust".

//I don't think, even after all of this time, that I'm ever going to understand Humans...//

\\What this time?\\

//Their religious book that tells them knowledge is evil and blind obedience and trust is good. It makes no sense.//

\\I'm fairly sure I know where that idea came from...\\

//Ah. Of course. Should have known.//

So many of the younger races trust the Vorlons. Trust them blindly, implicitly, so willing to overlook the horrors they have committed; the evils they have done. It frustrates the Shadows sometimes, that they should have to struggle so hard not just against the younger races' mistrust of the unknown, but also against the mistrust that has been built into so many of them.

The Vorlons, master manipulators that they are, have changed the very genetic makeup of so many of the races, building into them the automatic acceptance of them and an instinctive fear of the Shadows. And yet they claim that they are the force of good -- bringers of light and enlightenment, despite the fact that what they bring is exactly the opposite.

For millennia they have been altering the younger races. Manipulating them at their most basic levels to like them; to trust them. And then allowing themselves to be seen at certain times: glowing, perfect representatives of those races who appear in times of trouble and great need. They worm their way into the psyche of each race, encourage the reverence and worship, and the blind obedience. They make the races trust them, when all they are is a Lie.

The Shadows are relieved to find the Humans, because they, at least, have the sense to be outraged when they learn they've been lied to and used. They, at least, have the sense to question whether it is so wise to blindly follow without learning the truth. Now, the Shadows must fight against that genetic coding that tells the Humans they are demons, and help them understand how dangerous trusting the Vorlons can be...

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 342 per PocketWord
Crossposted to theatrical_muse

They'll learn. Or, they won't...\\

No matter how much they hate to admit it, their enemies the Vorlons are a necessary evil in the universe. Some part of the great cosmic balance that keeps it from tipping into utter chaos -- the destructive kind, not the constructive chaos that they try to bring to help the younger races grow and reach their potential.

But, if that restriction were gone -- if there were no consequences for one bad act... They would bring their fleet -- all of it, and the Planet Killers, and the fleets of all of their allies and followers -- and destroy the Vorlon homeworld. Wipe it out, reduce it to its component atoms and then scatter those to the cosmic winds, so that their enemies would have no way to reconstruct their base of power.

Obviously, there would still be Vorlons, because too many of them are off on other worlds, meddling in those races' lives, but they would be without their seat of power. The evil witch is destroyed, the princess marries the prince, and everything is perfect.\\

//Humans are so funny.//

\\Yes, they are.\\

The great battle comes. The sides are set. On the one side are the Vorlons and the races they have manipulated -- both physically and mentally. On the other side: Us, and all our Associates. All those who are not blinded by the Vorlons and realize that what they offer is nothing more than stagnation and death.

The battle is joined. So many of the younger races have such potential to grow -- all that is needed is for the weaker ones, those without potential, to be culled.

We know the Vorlons want to obliterate all that they call 'Shadow Touched'; all those who think as we do. They see it, naturally, as a threat to them. And yet if they are so good, should they not attempt to explain and allow the younger races a chance to decide for themselves? This is what we do, and yet they are the ones destroying entire worlds because a single being has agreed with us...

But back to our tale. before we get distracted by tangents: Before too many of those races with great potential can be destroyed, the Vorlons see the error of their ways. They realize that their way leads to destruction and death, that they have been using the younger races as pawns, and that blind obedience and manipulation only leads to dependency and weakness.

They not only cease fighting; they tell the younger races all that they have lied about. All the ways they've used them, all the things they have done to them, all the ways they have manipulated them.

And then they allow them to make their own decisions, and those that still resist our ways give us the perfect chance to cause the chaos and conflict to cull the weakest and ensure that life continues.

The End

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 353 per PocketWord
Crossposted to theatrical_muse</small>

The furthest in distance that we have travelled is Earth.

We always accompany Morden. We would never abandon him, so Babylon 5, Centauri Prime, Mars, Earth -- wherever he is required to go, we go too.

However, we return to our home every chance we get. Our home is our place of power, the source of everything that makes us what we are. Of course we would return there -- despite the damage done to it by Sheridan.

And yet, there are other ways to travel far from one's home, and in many of those ways, Babylon 5 is the furthest we have travelled. Their sectioned, glowing red eyes strike a primitive terror reaction into even the most rational creatures' minds; but to those who are most evolved, they fascinate and intrigue. And to a select few, those who are able to look beyond the terrifying appearance to the amazing minds within the frightening shells, they can be beautiful and arousing...

We assume that you think our opposite would be some soft-bodied, unevolved younger race, since we are the most ancient of the ancients, but traits like that are minor compared to the beliefs of those who are truly our opposites. Where we believe that only through Chaos can life continue, they mistakenly believe that Order is the only way for the Universe to survive. They are so wrong about this, blinding themselves to the fact that through their kind of imposed Order, nothing but stagnation and death can result. And they prove this time and time again, when they destroy those races that embrace life and change, simply because they have embraced us. They would rather eradicate our influence rather than allow one of their precious experiments to grow beyond their restrictive parameters...

Our opposites are the Vorlons...

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 230 per MS Word
Crossposted to theatrical_muse

So often, the younger races don't do the things they should do. So often, they side with the Vorlons, believing their messages because of their meddling, or because it's the only side they have been presented with. While we understand their ignorance, it still disappoints us, because it only proves that they are not ready to evolve.

Unfortunately, the only way to deal with these disappointments is to rid the Universe of them.
Regrets

What do you regret losing most?

//There's really only two things we've lost...//

\\...and one of those gave us an opportunity that we wouldn't have otherwise had, so it's not really a loss...\\

Of our losses, only two are truly difficult to bear -- one is the destruction of part of our homeworld by Captain Sheridan's attack. Many of our people were hurt or killed in that attack, and it was a grave loss for us. We are strong, though, and can bounce back from that.

The other is the loss of the Michael Garibaldi that we knew -- he gave himself to us so willingly when our ship took him away. He submitted to us, was willing to do anything to fill that emptiness in himself, and we miss that. It aided us, it aided our allies, it even aided the part of Psi Corps that wasn't allied with us. He was so willing to find anything that would fill that void in him that he gave himself over completely.

And yet, we can't really regret losing him, because what we have gained in exchange is so much greater. That other Garibaldi gave us almost no chance to seduce others, while the Garibaldi we know now, with his soul intact, could deliver us Valen, if we manage to play it right.

Truly, we have no regrets. Every change, every loss, gives us a new opportunity.

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 236 per Pocket Word
Crossposted to theatrical_muse

It's the End of the World As We Know It...

The world will end tomorrow. What will you do today?

//Which world? Our homeworld?//

\\Or Babylon 5?\\

//Or the Epsilon Eridani system? The galaxy?//

\\Or the entire Universe?\\

Our answer depends on which 'world' the question refers to. Our ships have the ability to travel great distances in Hyperspace in a short time, so relocation itself is quite simple. If it is Babylon 5, or this planetary system, or even the galaxy, we would simply take our allies and friends out of the area to a safer place. And perhaps our favourite projects and those we wish to bring over to our side. It would be a shame to lose those who could help us out so much if they became ours...

If it is the Universe? We would still be able to escape to another place, but it would take a little more work, and most probably would require the assistance of greater machinery than just our ships. But since we have greater machinery than just our ships, this is still not much of a stumbling block.

If it is our homeworld, Z'ha'dum, it could be more difficult. We would have to remove all who still live there, move the machines and components and other important projects, and convince... someone to move with us to a new homeworld. It would be hard to leave our home behind, but we would do it. We know there are many planets in this Universe that are ready to house us; many planets where our ships have been left behind, where our influence is felt even now.

We are an ancient race, and would not let the end of the world keep us from continuing.

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 282 per Pocket Word

We are usually curled up with Morden, and anyone who is sharing his bed at the moment, although sometimes we will hide ourselves if the person is easily frightened. In cases like that, we let Morden ease them into the family slowly before we even appear to them.

We spend much of our day traveling around the station, or wherever we happen to be at the time; gathering news or allies, seeing to it that various plans are put in motion, always working towards our goals. Sometimes we grab a small snack Downbelow, although we have to be careful to avoid the small enclave of rogue telepaths. And these days, we often keep an eye on Garibaldi while he does his work Downbelow. It is always better to know exactly where he is, so that we do not have any unexpected problems.

After we have checked on our projects and handled meetings or negotiations or whatever is necessary, we go with Morden to things he has to do, or travel with him, or go to his favourite cafe with him. As always, we keep all of our senses on our surroundings, making sure that those who wish us harm do not locate us.

Once our evening entertainment is finished, we return to Morden's quarters with him, and often satisfy his -- and our -- appetites for things other than food. And the day ends much as it began, with us curled up with Morden, sleeping comfortably and dreaming of what the Universe will be like when other races finally learn what we can offer them...

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 317 per Pocket Word

We already know he distrusts the Vorlons, so once he knows the whole story, he may be willing to join with us.

We spend some time reminding him of the pleasure we can give him -- we know, now, that he remembers it from his life as Galenn, but remembering pleasure is not the same as feeling it himself. We let Morden have him first -- the two of them are so drawn to each other that keeping apart is causing them both difficulty. Once he surrenders to Morden, we know he will surrender to us -- if nothing else, we will stimulate both of them until they are crazed and desperate, and then we will take them both.

Once his body knows what we can do for him, we talk him into taking us to the One so that we can tell him our side of things. We know he is wise and views arguments from all sides before making decisions -- it is only because of the Vorlons that he has never listened to our side. The Vorlons and their manipulations...

If it is truly a perfect evening, then he will choose our side of the argument and pledge the forces he controls to our cause. Once we have his allegiance, we will celebrate with a grand orgy, and end the evening curled around the three of them on Sinclair's bed...

It's either that, or killing the Vorlon.

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 313 per Pocket Word

What is good? What is evil?

//More concepts for the younger races...//

\\Sometimes it's difficult to think in these simplistic terms, but listening in to their conversations often helps\\

//Especially their accusations at the fashion show?//

\\Definitely a good start...\\

The concepts you call 'good' and 'evil' are not concrete. They are not easily defined. They change depending on one's viewpoint. Sometimes a majority tries to label something one or the other -- often itself 'good', and the minority 'evil', while the minority claims the opposite.

The Vorlons claim that their way is good; that our way is evil. How can this be, when their way -- the way of Order -- can only lead to stagnation and eventually death? What good can come from the wasting away of great civilizations, the loss of all chance of discovery and growth?

The Universe was created in Chaos -- growth and change comes from Chaos. Evolution, mutation, accident -- these are what keeps life continuing. On many planets, if not for a freak combination of circumstances, life would never have even sparked into being. Order is inimical to this. Nothing would change, nothing would provide that spark, and all would just continue along as it always had, on a dull, lifeless world.

Once life exists, it must adapt; it must grow. For this to happen, there must be change. Order keeps this change from happening; stagnation occurs, and the beings cannot adapt and grow. Eventually, unable to change, they die out. To force this unnatural order on things; to force beings to submit to a way of thinking that will eventually result in their deaths and the end of their race? That is evil...

And to manipulate those races at a genetic level into believing this is a good thing is the most evil thing of all...

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 305 per Pocket Word

...BOB's postcards?//

Daffy looked at the tattered piece of mail the Drakh had brought to them. One corner was shredded and looked as if a creature with dirty claws had been pawing at it. The writing surface was smudged and had a distinct bootheel indentation with stains they didn't really want to identify. The stamp was partially folded back, but when they flattened it down again read, 'Intergalactic Arda Mail Service, Isenguard Branch.'

The picture on the front confirmed Bugs' initial suspicion -- it was, indeed, one from BOB's collection, and showed a beautiful green and forested valley, with snowcapped mountains in the distance. The light shining through the leaves in the foreground was dappled and green, and had a very warm feel to it. In the bottom corner, the words "Beautiful New Zealand" were printed in white.

\\Can you read what it says?\\

//It looks like it's Craig's writing -- yes! There's his signature... 'Am having a wonderful time here in Gondor. Going to the forest with Faramir tomorrow. Should be great fun! You two would love some of the buildings in the neighboring country -- all black and spiky. Just your style! Wish you were here, Craig'//

\\Well, it sounds like he's having a lot of fun there -- I can't imagine how the postcard got stepped on, though. Sloppy postmen...\\

And, no matter what kind of government, eventually it must either evolve, or fall.

That is what some fail to understand -- living beings must grow and change. If they do not, the result is stagnation and eventual decline. Those who promote order as the desireable state of existence refuse to see that it is naturally limiting. They refuse to see that without chaos and change there is no hope of growth.

This universe was born in chaos -- all of nature is chaos -- to force order upon it is an unnatural state, and is eventually incompatible with life.

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 171

Perhaps Joaquin Phoenix could convey the right level of elegant menace...

And naturally, we would need expert voice actors to portray us. Voices conveying power and commanding respect -- perhaps James Earl Jones and Avery Brooks...

-----
Muse: Bugs & Daffy (Shadows)
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word count: 310
